The Michelle I Know
February 11th, 2010 by tastetherainbow09
The Michelle I know is a short story about a teenage girl who has leukemia and is waiting for a guy she likes to show up at the hospital to visit her. She has been in the hospital for eight weeks and thinks that nothing could be worse. She then later meets a man that has been in and out of the hospital for eight years. She then starts to realize how lucky she was to only have been there for such a short time and starts to cheer up. Then Rob arrives, the guy she has been waiting for all night. He is the only one of her friends that shows up to visit her every day, let alone a week. She then realizes how lucky she is and that things could be much worse (even though she has lost all her hair).
Some decisions Michelle makes were to stay and talk to Claude. He is the man that has been at the hospital for eight years and always plays his guitar. She learns how Claude deals with leukemia and has a few laughs in the proccess. Her biggest decision though, was to let her friend Rob go. He had been coming to the hospital every day just to see her and keep her company. She knows it can’t go on like this forever and he has to move on. He has done more than enough to help her and thats all she wanted and now she wants to help Rob by letting him go.
Some of the decisions she made would be the same as mine but i probably would have done a few things differently. I also would have let Rob move on. I would like him to visit some of the time but thats it. He wouldn’t have to come every day. I would want to become friends with the Claude guy because who knows how long you could be in there for. He seems like a good guy to hang out with. Someone to help pass the time. In the story she also had a wig that she put on when she left her room and it didn’t look real at all. I would have bought the best looking wig I could find because I wouldn’t look to good without hair.

Quests and Adventures
January 25th, 2010 by tastetherainbow09
Quest, adventure, leadership and courage are four things that every book has. Why? It is unknown, but I think that for a book to be good it has to have some kind of adventure. A person just sitting around not doing much SUCKS! The point of this blog is to prove that every book has one or more of those four themes. There is usually someone that sticks out more than the rest of the characters and tries to help others and direct them using leadership. Sometimes characters will put others before themselves which is courage. Other times characters will just get up and leave and go on a little adventure. While some characters will get up and leave with a goal in mind and take on a quest.
A book that I have read that has all of these themes is Tomorrow When the War Began. This book is set in Australia in present day and there are seven teenagers all around 16 and 17 that go on a camping trip in a meadow like area inside the mountain. While they were inside the meadow place, the part of Australia that they live in was attacked and taken over by people from a different country. The teenagers saw fighter jets and the odd helicopter while they were camping but didn’t think much of it. When they came out they went to Ellie’s house (the main character). Her parents were gone and most of their livestock were dead. They went to the nearby town and soon discovered that everyone in the area was being held hostage in the middle of the town where they were recently having a fair. There are lots of adventures and quests in this book. They go all around their rural area using all types of transportation. They fight the enemy with courage and the odd time someone will lead the group onto the heart of the enemy.

“Hey There- Wanna Buy a Tank”
January 24th, 2010 by tastetherainbow09
Weapons are used in many ways. Hunting, competition and just plain fun are some of these ways but some weapons are used for war. Canada makes parts for weapons and sells them to the U.S.A. to build and do what they want with the finished product. This industry brings in $300 million annually for Canada. Alot of these weapons are bought by third world countries who get them from the U.S.A., not Canada. If they want to buy something, we can’t stop them. It’s not illegal to buy a gun. If we stopped selling gun parts to the U.S.A., they wouldn’t have alot of wepons to sell. These weapons aren’t only bought by third world countries but also by countries that have alot of money and aren’t on the brink of war. Stopping Canada from selling these weapons would not only upset the economy but the countries that buy our weapons too. That includes our close friend and allies the U.S.A.. For these reasons I think we should keep selling weapons because we can’t control other countries and the decisions they make are their own decision.

Science Fiction

SCIENCE FICTION
Science fiction is our scary future. It is everything that could go wrong. We don’t know what the future holds and people know that. They make books that tell of a future that we don’t want to happen but we keep reading so that we know how it all ends. A science fiction book usually uses something that we have invented or are trying to invent and uses it to start turning people into zombies or kill everything that breathes. They use these books to warn us of what might happen if we take it too far or if we make one little mistake. They use our future to scare us by twisting it a little and that is what makes people read these books; they want to know the possibilities of our future. They mostly use technology to start killing of the human race. Something from another planet comes to our world. A new and powerful device has a mind of its own and is slowly taking over. This is science fiction. This is our future!
A book that I actually found very interesting is The Chrysalids. It was a book that took us to the future but also took us back to the past. This book is like no other. A nuclear bomb has dropped and now we are back to the start. As some of the science fiction movies are, The Chrysalids wipes out most of humanity and there are a brave few that survive. It fits the genre so well because it’s in the future and humanity was put at risk. I find this book so interesting because there are no other books like it. There are books that kill of a lot of people just like this book but the way they did it and how the people deal with it is much different. It is in the future but they are living like it is the past. This is what keeps a reader reading. It’s what puts the icing on the cake. This is why I like this book and this is why you should give it a try.

Fantasy

FANTASY
When someone is writing a fantasy book, it is one of the few times that they can just write down whatever comes to their mind because fantasy is whatever you want. One reason that I like fantasy books is because it is something that someone usually doesn’t experience every day. It is kind of like a new experience for me when I read a fantasy book because no fantasy books are the same. There is always good and evil (And that one person that you never know which side they are on). Good against evil is probably the most popular theme in a fantasy novel. It is what draws the reader in. The reader always wants to know who gets killed in the sword or light saber battle or who wins the tri-wizard cup. These things that no one has ever seen before are what keep the reader reading because they want to know more about the worlds they have never known. This is why fantasy novels are my favorite novels and are one of the most popular in the world.
As movies and books, Star Wars is the best fantasy saga ever created. It is a work of art in words. It connects us with other worlds. The people in it are like us in so many ways but in so many other ways they are also different than us. I think it is so popular because it takes everything we know to the next level. Swords turned into light sabers, guns turned into laser guns and tanks to armored assault tanks. It also takes humans and their abilities to the next level. They can move objects using the force and jump in the air 30 feet. The Star Wars saga fits the fantasy genre so well because it is so out of this world but it is also so in this world. People can still enjoy stuff they have never seen before but at the same time they can connect with the characters and the problems they face as they fight their way through the universe. This is why Star Wars is the best fantasy saga ever.

Mystery and Suspense

Mystery and Suspense
Mystery and suspense is designed to put the reader on the edge of their seats. It is made to scare people who are brave enough to read, listen to, or watch what few others dare to. When it is written on paper it is much harder to scare people. Most books will have little parts that will lead to a bigger part that eventually lead to the climax which is usually the scariest part and this is also where everything comes together and it all starts to make sense. All those little parts give you clues to what the end is like but you usually don’t figure them out until you have read the end. These little parts that lead up to the climax are all part of the big plan and are also used to keep the reader interested.
A mystery and suspense story that we have read is The Death Trap. The death trap is a short story about a magician named Armondo. He has come to a new town and has fallen in love with the sheriff’s wife. He is performing tricks and is becoming popular among the town. The sheriff has noticed that Armondo and his wife like each other and has set up a sure death trap for Armondo. He has been put in a straight jacket that has Chinese finger traps for each finger and he is being lowered into the freezing cold river while in a crate that has been nailed shut. After a minute or so of him being in the water they try to pull him out but the crane won’t lift. They eventually get him out and are expecting him to be dead but instead they find an empty crate with the straight jacket neatly folded on the bottom of the crate. Where has Armondo gone? Is he even still alive? That is what a mystery and suspense story is all about.

The Unexplained

The Unexplained
What do you think of when you hear the word “UFO”? I think of aliens, E.T., flying saucers, Area 51 and crop circles. Crop circles are one of the few things that we cannot figure out. Who made them? Some say hooligans. Others say aliens. I don’t know what to think. What about ghosts or Bigfoot? None of these things have been proven but people still try and prove that they are real. I think that there are lots of movies about things that are unexplained because there are no boundaries to the unexplained. People could make an alien movie and nobody could say it is wrong because they don’t know what an alien looks like. When people think of ghosts they think of them as scary things that are out to hurt you. Most people probably think this because of all the scary movies that make ghosts seem bad. Since nobody knows what the unexplained are like, movie makers can make them seem however they want.
Bigfoot. One of the few things we cannot figure out. There is proof that suggests that these giant humanoids are alive but if they are living and hiding in our forests, then how come we haven’t found anything that would totally prove that they are real. There are many stories of people seeing these giants but the best proof that we have is the famous video of Sasquatch but too many people think it is fake. The one question surrounding Bigfoot is “Are they real?”Personally I would like to think they are real. There are so many things that say they are real but there are also so many things that say they aren’t. There are pictures and videos of the beast and people who say they saw it but for them to maintain a population that would keep them around there would have to be a lot more of them but if there were a lot more of them you would think that we would see more of them. Bigfoot. We still can’t figure them out.
